I hate that so many what would otherwise be cool new technology has such negative externalities and utterly awful billionaires in charge that it makes using it a non-starter.

For example Starlink. Broadband internet anywhere for $50/month? And they can launch and land and reuse their rockets over and over? Wtf! That's incredible tech! ... And yet...

Not going to lie. AI is some really cool tech. Sure, I know I know, I know. But it is cool tech. And yet...

@JessTheUnstill I feel the same about crypto currency. A validatable history with each party's agreements being validated publically? From an academic standpoint, that's interesting! From a practical standpoint, it makes me curious to see if it could solve any problems - especially ones that require an immutable contract without worrying about a third party's trustworthyness!
Unfortunatly what we actually got was scams.

@JessTheUnstill This so much. So many amazingly cool things out there, but way too often are used to kill and suppress peoples and opinions

It just makes me so unreasonable angry that there's so many cool futuristic things that little Jess read about in Popular Science or whatever and dreamed wouldn't it be great. And now we have a bunch of cool future tech. Glasses that can tell you people's names. Cars that drive themselves. Little helicopters that can deliver packages. The ability to make cool artwork even for those of us who struggle making good stick figures. The idea that anyone could go to space. Internet I could use from a magic pocket computer from the top of a mountain. Idk just all this cool shit. And now I have to see it all ruined by the worst excesses of capitalists, how it's all built on human exploitation and suffering and dumping all the externalities on everyone else.

@JessTheUnstill we went from "this is why we can't have nice things" to "this is why the nice things we have really aren't that nice"

@JessTheUnstill are you suggesting there might be nuance to the conversation?! It isn’t just black and white ?! Gasp in disbelief
