We are looking at growing the Mastodon team with two new backend developers. We are starting some ambitious projects and need help!
You need to have a significant experience with Ruby on Rails as this is our framework of choice, but we are also looking for experience in search algorithms, protocol specifications, Rust or Go and project management (this one to assist me in tracking everything we are working on).
If you are interested, please apply using the form provided in the job description.

@MastodonEngineering In this position, you will work on what we recently talked about in this blog post: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/02/our-technical-direction/
This includes implementing shared blocklists in Mastodon, new tools to help with moderation, a new FASP to reduce the storage costs for remote images and videos, getting Fediscovery to production and many other things.

I clicked one of your hashtags, used the "browse other,". and resulting search showed no quote posts, UNLESS the hashtag was outside the quote too.
My guess is hashtags inside quote posts are NOT processed rhe same way

@renchap I would like to apply for your project manager position, or is that just part of the dev roles?

I’m really excited about a lot of these developments. Kudos to Mastodon for continuing to push things forward.
I’m also really curious about shared blocklists in particular.. do you know how I can learn more about how Mastodon will be implementing this?

@renchap @MastodonEngineering I'm worried about the recent growth of mastodon. If you become too big, governments will notice and will ask you to enforce age verification like on the big commercial platforms.

@renchap Is this a paid position, or is there fine print at the end of the application form telling us it's pro bono?

@benpate No plan is set in stone yet, but we are looking into being able to ingest "static" blocklist files (likely using an already used format somewhere) and would like to add FIRES support as well.
They complexity here is that we want admins to keep control over it, so having external blocklists either as "automatically applied” (if they really trust them) but with an audit log, or as suggestions, and the admin must confirm the action. -

Beyond internal team roles, does the team actively think about how to encourage and empower third-party developers to contribute? This seems crucial for the success of FLOSS projects. From the outside, the Mastodon team can sometimes appear fairly insular and opaque in their plans beyond just high level overview.

@renchap @MastodonEngineering so will the filed issue be reopened?
- Cuz devs insisted on closing it solely off vibes, without discussing the fact that even back then any decent software had this feature…

@renchap Are you looking for someone that will implement mandatory 3 level tags? Because we desperately need them:
Area>Country/Region>Entity
This so we can clean our feed of undesired posts, e.g. I want to follow BBC but not on movies or football. And I have no way to do it without blocking the whole dictionary (e.g. blocking "Arsenal" will also filter out some news about a military infrastructure...).
It's sad. -

@renchap Is the significant experience with Ruby on Rails a hard requirement? I have around 8 years of experience as a backend engineer in different stacks but I would love to work with you guys.
