    "AI" is a fossil fuel-based technology

    ...and the sheer scale of it is simply terrifying.

    "The total amount spent on the Apollo space program cost less than the amount that was spent last year on data centres.”

    More from IEA’s Siddharth Singh on the rapid rise in investment in data centres & AI – and what it means for the energy sector 👉
    https://www.iea.org/reports/key-questions-on-energy-and-ai "

    "around 15‑27 GW of onsite natural [fossil!] gas may power data centres by 2030, mostly in the United States" — IEA – International Energy Agency https://www.iea.org

      @parents4future Wuy would AI be a fossil fuel-based technology? It consumes only electricity which is not necessarily converted from fossil fuels.

        @amki we prefer to face the physical reality, — instead of theoretically possible solutions …🤷‍♀️

        Just read the article by @ketan 🤷‍♂️

        ▶️ https://ketanjoshi.co/2026/05/13/why-anthropics-ultra-dirty-deal-shouldnt-surprise-you-at-all/

        "A magic sprinkling of solar for the gas plant"

        "…there is a small solar plant popping up right next door to the Colossus 1 data centre, perfectly timed with Anthropic’s deal. It is 30 megawatts.

        That’ll produce about 0.05 terawatt hours in one year. Compared to an approximate 2.9 TWh of consumption from Colossus 1, that is a 1.8% reduction in the volume of gas burned. Once the other data centre stages are up and running, it’ll be about 0.3% of total."

          @parents4future @ketan I thought your organization was explicitly about the future and a theoretical way to make it liveable well and not the state of the world right now and accompanying nihilism.

          The name must have confused me.

          If there is no way to produce needed energy in a clean way we are doomed either way so...

            No, @amki, we are not necessarily "doomed" — but you can't have everything you want, all at once, right now.

            You have to accept limits.

            Especially our #BigTech overlords don't want to accept that, — so we'll have to make them.

            @ketan

              @amki

              If we waste what energy we can safely produce on hyped-up auto-completes, THEN we're (closer to being) doomed.

              Gen AI is techbro bullshit and needs to die.

              That's not nihilism, it's realism.

                @fedithom @parents4future @ketan Calling LLMs hyped up auto complete is at best disingenuous.

                I also don't see the imposed limit on clean energy production. If we used the potential that is accessible with current technology there should be more than enough energy.

                Managing to use more energy in new ways has always been what defined progress.

                  You are right, @amki, when you don't see an imposed limit on clean energy production.

                  So let's just pass legislation and regulations that make clean energy mandatory for AI. 😎
