People have tried, and failed, for millenia to answer "what is comedy?"

I have no answer to that, but I can tell you some things that I think all successful comedians have in common:

Insatiable curiosity.
High intelligence.
An ability to read people.
A desire to improve people's lives.
The ability to win people over and reach agreements.
No fear of calling out bullshit.
Able to put bullies in their place.

We could do much worse than nominating a comedian.
