    I won't be surprised if future data centers are equipped with Patriot, THAAD, or some sort of shields. I mean, everything is now digital and AI is pushed these days to everyone. Right? So now, data center builders or operators like Google/AWS and others not only have to worry about fire, water, theft,DDoS, & other traditional threats, but they now have to think of adding further defenses in the age of drones and missiles. Modern problems require modern solutions. This is not fiction anymore.

    i just realised this is how AI will get weapons. Ah, yes Skynet from Terminator https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skynet_(Terminator) 😱 the line between sci-fi and daily life is blurring now faster then ever when they start deploying weapons. damn!

      @nixCraft, I think this aspect is partially responsible for Musk's fantasies about AI centers in space

      @strider @nixCraft

      Kessler syndrome is gonna be fun with DC in space.

        @nixCraft Oil & Gas has been doing this for a long time. Walking in these L-shaped tunnels to and from your "office", "home", and "rec".

          @nixCraft IMHO it's not really up to the datacenter builder to think about how to counter military grade weapon like missiles (and however they think about countering, it won't be enough).
          They may rethink installing datacenter in "prone to war" zone.

          @neodiablow i know. it is more of my stretched imagination right now. but if they must build data center near business hub like those in middle east (or anywhere else for that matters) they have to come with some sort of agreement. again, i am an idiot who reads lots of sci-fi so you should ignore my messages 😉 and consider this as just shitpost.

            Already have....
            Drones flying in swarms, buddy planes next to fighter jets ....

            #skynet already here

                @nixCraft, yeah, at this point we can already drop the -fiction part of sci-fi

                  @nixCraft What if that evil AGI started deleting its own code, just like what happened with #Amazon #data recently? 😅

                  I think an Evil #AI is at least many decades away, if not centuries.

                    @nixCraft the future of datacenter design will be underground. Or possibly hybrid, with surface buildings that retract into the ground when nuclear-armed religious zealots kick off armageddon.

                      Translation: many companies are now realizing why they need competent IT staff or sysadmins to build IT infrastructure that will survive any type of outage or attack on data centers. Many developers and C-suites think they will use AI to build infrastructure and fire senior sysadmins and IT staff to save salaries. Then, one day, they find out everything is out because neither developers nor C-suites know anything about DR or keeping backups.

                      @nixCraft I don’t know if this is really new. I mean, yeah, missiles are new but even back in the 1990s we used to worry about a plane hitting a data center, especially if it was near an airport.

                      I guess the cloud has abstracted this a bit, tho

                        @nixCraft "Keeping backups"? That is a big assumption that they make backups or even do the next step, to verify backups.
