Fascism enabling isn't just ICE. It's the little old grannies too.

I was at a community meeting and this conversation happened.

Little old Granny (LOG): " did you hear about the protest outside of [ local grocer]? It is just awful. A bunch of people protested because they carry 3 Israeli products. I didn't see them protest when they carried that Palestinian olive oil."

Me: " that was a good olive oil"

Another man in the group: "indeed it was. Great oil"

Me: " do they still make that? Didn't the IDF burn all the olive trees?"

LOG: " why does every conversation have to turn political?"

Let's break this down. Complaining about protestors outside the grocery store is not political. Stating a fact read from the news is political.

This is how they shut down dissent and aid war crimes. It's wrong of me to even say it out loud but it was ok to complain about those damn kids protesting.

Fascism isn't just ICE. It's enabling by the little old grannies who are otherwise the nicest people.

      @chu

"Go with the flow" people tend to be nice.

      Won't argue with anything.

If it's come before them by some state or commercially opaque path, ideally with smiley-people media promotion, they'll buy it.

There was a lot of them in my generation. Maybe still.

@chu Very true, and the "otherwise the nicest people" part hits home particularly hard.

Growing up, my Grandma always had Rush Limbaugh playing on the radio, FOX News on the TV, all that. She was also a woman who supported her (grand)kids even when they made decisions she didn't agree with. When my nudist libertarian aunt and uncle needed a place to stay for awhile, she hosted them at her house as long as they needed. When I was out as an atheist, and had a heated conversation about that with a particular aunt and broke down in tears after she left, it was my pillar-of-the-church Grandma that held me while I sobbed in her arms. I'll never forget that.

The thing that struck me, as I moved far enough left to see it, was this: you could always tell which opinions were hers, and which things she'd been told to believe by right-wing media, because the two were worlds apart. That's really what taught me the evil that conservative media does TO our elders, not just THROUGH them.

@chu Also worth reminding people that those little old grannies? Can be their own family members, too. Which a lot of people just don't want to deal with.

The number of times I hear this kind of garbage from my own mother is excruciatingly disgusting (and also my grandmother, aunt, cousins... and it used to be all of the men, too, but nature ensured that they're all unable to speak anymore). It's not just someone else's little old granny; it can even be your own.

            Fascists are typically a minority.

            Fascism never is.
