    @sean_ae oh word yeah it’s funny how often I’m fading a track out thinking, “this groove is rad how about another few minutes?” Sometimes I end up chopping off half the song which can be astonishingly different. But in this it’s not two different songs but the back half kinda flips it around and interpolates it about.

    @changterhune yeah I like how things can just grow out of other things

    Like I would never have just made that ending part as a track, it had to be a reaction to that first stuff

      @sfn yeah it would have but the parameters in the first port were stored in the Live files instead of the patches

      Idk why I did that, just trying a diff way I suppose (supposedly the correct way)

      @sean_ae ahhaaa i see. and how does it work in Live? just out of curiousity, Live differentiates between midi and audio channels no? so can u load an entire channel with seq synth fx, or is it one module per live device or whatever its called?

        was trying a new (at the time) m4l port of our rig - a lot closer to the way the rig works in Max than the older port we used on SIGN/PLUS

        (so a good chunk of it was culled from the bit of the set i was working on then)

          @sfn yeah there’s midi and audio channels and different device types that have to appear in order in there (there’s a logic to it but it’s a bit annoying sometimes eg if your fx modules require sequencing, you have to send that from a midi channel)
          It’s all doable but a bit of a faff (but then VST fx don’t have note input either so it is what it is)

                        someone else said hurdy-gurdy about the back half and that's making me hear the it with Coil on my mind, which is a fun way of listening to that section.

                            @sean_ae Many have already expressed this, but thank you for sharing - it was really enjoyable in these early hours; and I can't get enough of that pipe sound with those tunings. Lovely where the atmospheres turn to in the middle to second half also. Those musical reverbs and filtered chordal slabs.👌

                                    @chorist yeah i would say so, cos loads of them are doing more than you'd normally think of that type of module doing strictly (although it's a bit like how hardware synths might have some sequencing internally alongside whatever you're sending to them)

                                    the way i do it is seq modules just do sequencing, synths do sequencing and synthesis, and fx do sequencing, synthesis and effect stuff

                                    it gets more complex as you go down the chain basically, to the point where i can be doing whole tracks in one fx module (i do this cos my background is making one patch per track and i still like working that way sometimes cos it def has upsides)

                                    i mean end of the day it's Max, and although i enjoy the rough formalism of hardware workflow i also like the weirder things you can do with hardware, and the near total connectivity you get in Max

                                    Do you work this way because it allows for new types of sounds from the effects modules synthesis or is it more that you end up with an endless amount of variations depending on how you sequence and synthesis from the effects?

                                      @eko_ @chorist it's partly a matter of signal flow but a bit just how i think in general, like i don't want anything to be off limits but i like the basic module types way of thinking cos i grew up with it

                                      i mean really i'm just using the hardware paradigm cos i got used to that before VSTs were a thing, and then expanding the idea a bit into anything goes territory (and i already thought of hardware that way cos synths can have things like envelopes, LFOs, arpegs, built in seqs - and some fx units would be able to use midi notes and had LFOs or envelopes etc, and to me all of those things can be generalised into 'sequencing')

                                      but the lines between sequencing/synthesis/processing can get very blurry - like it's prob a bit arbitrary to split modules up into types at all, it's mostly a factor of age and experience in my case, habits etc

                                          @eko_ @chorist yeah i'm not really using LFOs much, but what i mean is that once you think of an LFO as a sort of sequencing-speed repeating function then you can start thinking about what other things it's interchangeable with, cos if it's all 'sequencing' then you can have anything in there really, any kind of animation

                                          and with some synths or fx there might be some kinds of animation that you find more effective than what you're used to seeing in those contexts (like an LFO might be boring in comparison - or not, ymmv and all that)

                                          same goes for envelopes - like it's best not to take anything for granted (just cos it's how it's always been done), and there might be more interesting alternatives (imho there are anyway)
