@datarama depending how one defines computer touching not doing it will make replying to the poll problematic.

@Colman Someone asked about gender above, and for the purposes of this poll I think "computer toucher" should read as "I identify as a computer toucher" without any gatekeeping. 🙂

(So far, the conclusion is that I don't know anybody who doesn't touch computers for a living.)

@datarama There are a disproportionate number of computer touchers on Mastodon

@datarama Can't answer that without keeping a diary - there are plenty of things I do without looking at a recipe, and plenty that I look at recipes for. I don't think either is "usually" but I haven't kept a tally so don't really know.

@TimWardCam @datarama Same. There needs to be an "either" choice.

When I cook I look at a recipe
              then change most of it.

@datarama If I use a recipe, but it's stored in my head and I don't need to refer to a written recipe, is that still following a recipe for your purposes? Most of the time I cook the same meals because I'm a creature of habit, so I would only use a printed recipe on the rare occasion I cook something new and unfamiliar.

I'm a computer toucher and I sometimes use recipes for
inspiration but then I just wing it.

                    @datarama

I often look at many recipes for the same or adjacent dishes, combine the parts I like/find interesting. I use that as a general guide, and kinda freestyle after that.

I rarely use a recipe for day to day cooking unless I'm making something super specific or very unfamiliar.

Most stuff turns out just fine, the only downside is I rarely make anything the exact same way more than once.

But unless it's a dish consisting entirely of staples, I'm always just working with what I've got on hand, and that changes not infrequently.

@datarama so, to be clear, by a ”computer toucher” you mean someone whose work's content is tinkering with computer systems themselves (eg. programming), but not those whose work merely involves typing with computer (eg. any office worker)?

@Stoori I don't gatekeep. If you consider yourself a computer toucher, you're a computer toucher. If you don't, you're not.

@skyfaller Personally, I'd consider that "going by a recipe" if you're doing almost exactly what the original written one said, but not if you've ended up modifying and personalizing it so much in your head that it doesn't correspond to any written recipe you've read.

But, no gatekeeping: If you consider what you do "using a recipe", then you're using a recipe; if you don't you're not.

@datarama Oh. I did not interpret computer touchers as people who did it for a living. I interpreted it as anybody who uses a computer. And wondered how there would be any of those on the fediverse—I concluded that some could use phone/tablet and not consider those computers, but also suspect that most of the people who use phone/tablet and not a desktop/laptop computer as well are not on the fediverse.

@musiciankate As I described elsewhere, for the purposes of this poll you're a computer toucher if you consider yourself a computer toucher. If you don't, you're not. 🙂
