Wow! Unable to confirm security, UBC has still not reopened access to Canvas, instead choosing to pivot to open source for continuity! WordPress, MediaWiki, and Moodle (!) are being offered as alternatives.
This is open educational technology at its best!

@Linkletter we are a Moodle shop but our neighbours across the river went to Canvas a few years ago. #schadenfreude

@Linkletter that pivot sounds like what needs to happen, but I wonder how Universities are thinking about managing OSS risk in that pivot?
I spent a bunch of time recently looking at digital soverignty in higher ed, and I think there's a great opportunity with careful planning. OSS being part of that, but as a steward and not just user.

@Linkletter omg lol
I mean, Blackboard sucked too but at least it was on premises. I know more than I want to about how that's all done at UBC and, well, "told you so" doesn't cover it. Like I said when I worked there, buying solutions is actually not innovative, and everyone buying the same solution is basically Dutch Elm Disease. And that wasn't just me justifying my job as a programmer. Bean counters rule supreme

@Linkletter honest question, why is this needed? Why not have it like the old days and hand over papers, or email a PDF or whatever
So far I don't see the value of this platforms
