    I do not want to "take back tech".

    I want something new to grow from the needs, utopias and desires that a community focused on a convivial life develops.

    "Tech" as a social structure might not be salvageable.

      @tante

      I share that pessimism.

      I might go farther: some days I'm not convinced the science, academic science, is salvageable. The complete capture of computer science, e.g., reminds me of nothing so much as the selling of indulgences which lead to the protestant reformation.

      What a scientific reformation would look like, I don't know, but the loss of the public's trust for academic science's statements is a huge blow, when we need them for "truth-seeking exercises", as @pluralistic puts it.

        @poritzj there are people in the scientific community who actually want to change things but it takes a long time and needs a radical rethinking about what role science should play in a democratic society. So yeah. I hope they get their heads out of their asses but it's not easy.

            @tante I just red a book about engineers feeling cognitive dissonance (*Lettre aux Ingénieurs qui doutent*, Oliver Lefebvre) and it reminds that human societies craft tools that mold them back. The example of the car is a strong one with now car centric infrastructure. Then what do we do with this ? The book does not offer a solution and is not about finding a solution, but introducing the social issues to engineers that they may face in their lives. As usual, the root lies in capitalism, but we need to find a way to create better tech, and know when we should not work on a solution that would be pre empted by capital.

              @tante but what is "tech" ?

              The internet, computers, electricity, steam, steel, printing, writing, spinning, farming...

              Humanity is intertwined with tech

              We can't live without some of it.

              The question is: do we serve tech or does it serve us?

                @baalroga @tante That is exactly what we have been doing here at Haystacks Tech. I spent $1.1M of my own money to build $11M worth of value, and I give 90% of that away for free! We believe everything should be free and supported by a loving and caring tech community: https://youtu.be/Rd13XD4lI1U?si=4puBP58KqX_hGxnn
