Sandra has just had the email to say that Amazon is going to break her Kindle, which works perfectly well and which she uses daily.

I use Calibre to load ebooks onto my my ereader, but I don't think that Sandra is going to want to do this.

What a shame, since this basically consigns a working device to the scrapheap of ewaste (unless I repurpose it :)).

@tom @neil I'm also curious. Will it just stop being able to connect to her account, or are they going to do more to it?

(I have not validated "use these devices in any way"; this might mean "in any supported way".)

@neil we jailbroke our old kindle, it's quite easy to do

Using koreader https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/post-jailbreak/koreader.html allows it to also render epubs not only the aws mobi format. This way, as long as you have the files (which you can buy from other platforms online, e.g. ebook.de) you can simply drag and drop them onto the device using USB. Calibre not required

@maybeanerd I am fine with this kind of approach, but Sandra users her ereader standalone.

@neil Oh I thought calibre/extra software would be the issue there

I _think_ you can continue using the store after some jailbreaks https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/post-jailbreak/re-enabling-the-store/ (haven't tried myself) although I wonder which part Amazon is killing that you were talking about - that might also affect this option

@neil fuck those arseholes. Can you get the books off them and put them in Calibre? It’s possible to self host Calibre Web and create an OPDS feed that KOReader can use as a ‘bookstore’. If she’d prefer a new device, Boox are multi platform so have the Kindle app on them.

@neil I wish there was something as good as Audiobookshelf for epub. One that also had firmware builds for kindle/kobo/etc

@mini @neil my present Kindle isn't swelling, but it's definitely lasting less well.

Happily, the new Kobos are designed to be repairable!
