    My adapter cable has the wrong pinout. D‘oh.

        @socketwench At least I learned that there are several different "standard" pinouts for those cables… I hope I remember it for the next time. 😄

          @janbeta Odd question, have you ever used or have needed one of those soldering hot plates? I've seen them advertised for reflow work, but almost never see anyone using them for repairs.

            @janbeta

            *done the modification*

            but not all distros support it by default. sometime switching to x11 or play with config.txt/cmdline.txt is needed.

              @socketwench I heard they work very well but have not tried them myself. I guess they are more useful for populating fresh boards, not so much for repairs/rework.

                  @thomas I think my settings are fine. I just didn’t think of measuring the cable pinout. Turns out, I have the ground connection on the wrong pins. No wonder I didn’t get a proper picture... 😄

                    @janbeta Been exactly there, done exactly that... I feel you! I'm glad it worked out in the end. Enjoy!

                    (LMK if you want to send shader output to that composite video with no X11. That was another rough ride I've gone through.)

                        @janbeta Even though 30+ years of futzing with computers has taught me to always check the cable first, I never check the cable first.

                          @janbeta @socketwench I've used a mini-soldering plate in repairing an LED television last year (thread is here: https://mastodon.social/@GamesMissed/114701321053574112). The hot plate couldn't melt the solder by itself, but provided enough thermal energy into the chunky LED strips that I was then able to easily remove the dead LEDs with my soldering irons.

                                @janbeta @socketwench yeah, just like for cellphone there's two of them… OMTP vs CTIA.

                                There are adapters like this:
