@ChrisMayLA6 One day I realized in high stress or anger I temporarily forget passwords. That day I created second Keepass database for "offline things", like pendrives, encrypted volumes and external drives, hardware keys... I felt it was risky after ~2 years without any notes for that part of things.

@ChrisMayLA6 @tomgauld.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy Passwords are a pain. But are increasingly deprecated. Passkeys or password managers are now recommended. Or a very complex password for each site, in a little anonymous looking notebook that never leaves the house.
OTOH I know people who don't even try to recall passwords, but use the password reset procedure- which is a bit like using a passkey in effect.

On the phone with Hilton hotels yesterday trying to recover a very old loyalty program account. Phone agent asked:
Name
Phone
Email
Me: "Can you tell me the domain?"

"No, I can't tell you that."

I went through every email I could think of for several minutes. Then I gave up. I made the account 15 years ago. Now I know to always put the associated email in my password manager. But 15 years ago? It was probably an email I no longer have.

I'm using the same #email address for 25 years now. Own domain, paying a low monthly fee to my email provider. Switched the provider once when the old one forced migration to MS Outlook. Ad-free, provider doesn't sell my data.

That reminded me of a scene from the excellent and greatly underrated comedy sci-fi series Hyperdrive (Nick Frost, Miranda Hart, Kevin Eldon). There is a pressing need to shoot an alien, and the guns have all been factory reset to remove a virus, and require a set of questions to be answered prior to first use.

@PVTejas @ChrisMayLA6 That just happened here, was on the news this morning. The guy that blew up got suspended from university for 6 weeks because he forgot the password he needs to log in to the testing platform during an exam. He blew up in the face of the exam guards and got removed.
