We can’t recycle our way out of the plastic crisis.

As long as companies keep ramping up plastic production, recycling will always be too little, too late.

We need to turn off the plastic tap and cut how much is made in the first place.

We demand that governments commit to a strong Global Plastics Treaty that will cut plastic production by at least 75% by 2040 to stay below 1.5 C and end single-use plastic.

@greenpeace you may choose plastic bottle or glas bottle, tomatoes in plastic folie or loose ones, etc, etc. Many goods have a plastic free option - and look what's in their shopping baskets... That's the reason for plastic production. I am really tired of blaming others for our own bad. It is in our own hands!

@snailinjection @greenpeace yes we can do as much as possible in the range of our own behavior everyday. But in that case it is not only ourselves choice to reduce plastic or fossil fuel production so far. Therefore the elected governments should care about ALL people and not only themselves.

I'm sure everyone know this @greenpeace but, I would still like to point out that 'plastics' are actually a by-product of oil and gas production.

Sometimes people don't make that connection.

The equation of the longevity of each type of plastic is basically built directly from the oil and gas production process.

There are some special formulations that have no equal but, you can't get oil and gas without a giant heap of trash. Either now or later after being used a few times first.

            OIL + GAS

@dckim @greenpeace there is the other sticky point, that while plastic pollution is a problem, plastic waste is also carbon that has not made it into our atmosphere.

what on earth does this childish performative post really mean ?

c'mon greenpeace, lay out a plan: what happens if we keep plastic production at the same level

how do we make mice and keyboards and what do we use for clothes ?
c'mon, don't be performative, give us a plan

@failedLyndonLaRouchite out of interest, do *you* have a plan to offer, other than pretending that it isn't a problem? We are all in this mess together.

as i am just some internet rando, it isn't my job to come up with a plan - that is a job for experts, which, I would assume, greenpeace is in contact with.

Like every large non profit (charity) in teh US, GP has to file a tax return called a form 990
                    you can see that here
                    https://projects.propublica.org/nonprofits/organizations/521541501

the latest data is for 2024; GP in the US raised 38 million dollars in revenue !!

maybe if there senior employees werent so grotesquely over paid, they would have money to devise a plan
In the US, the CEO made almost a million dollars !!!!!!!!!

                      Hi,
your question confuses me a lot:
clothes - mine are made from cotton, you might have heard about it?
mice - you might want to collect and weigh all the plastic you bring home and discard (food, …) during the lifetime of one computer mouse/keyboard pair.
Reducing plastic use / mis-use does not mean you have to live in cave tomorrow!

@failedLyndonLaRouchite in fact, a lot of Greenpeace's funds come from Internet randos - it's not like big corps are sending lots of money. But, OK, I get that you don't think Greenpeace is doing the job. Are you donating to another non-profit? Because it sounds to me like you are doing nothing at all.

We can’t recycle our way out of the plastic crisis.

As long as companies keep ramping up plastic production, recycling will always be too little, too late.

@greenpeace does this includes the bio degradable ones we keep hearing about ?? and you hear about developments that they are making plastic out of plants or whatever; wonder if all that should be classified as 'plastic' !!!

I don't care about how much $ GP has; I care about them offering BS posts instead of plans

you think a salary of close to a million dollars is ok ?
that is, IMO, a yes or no question

I do do a lot; most of my charitable donations go to places that do things like deliver mosquito nets to Africa, or Vitamin A to poor kids
so piss off with your assumptions

@failedLyndonLaRouchite sorry for making assumptions. For your part, you could stop assuming that 1 single toot is the whole of Greenpeace's plastics plan. They do, in fact, have more, and it isn't hard to find.

                                      a nice, polite reply
                                      🙂

Given that the CEO is paid almost a million dollars, I think he or she cold make sure that future posts include a link to their plans to reduce plastic use

I myself, maybe due to my background (PhD, biochem) think that a large part of any real world solution is biodegradable plastic, which, as you may know, a lot of people are working hard on

We can’t recycle our way out of the plastic crisis.

As long as companies keep ramping up plastic production, recycling will always be too little, too late.

@greenpeace What really gets me is that you have to pay 10 pence for a plastic bag, that you store all of the products you just bought. The majority of which is in plastic containers. It's clearly one huge scam being operated by the supermarkets among others...

                                          @greenpeace

It’s ironic, isn’t it that Donald Trump is going to be the most significant eco warrior.

That war in Iran is choking off the feed stock of resins that go into every plastic product.
