TIL: Estimated 25% of the global production of fiber optic cables end up directly on the battlefield in the Ukraine
Remark: the data shows Russia buying currently 10% of the global supply (less than 1% before the war) and I expect the Ukraine to consume even more.
Experts (which I respect a lot) predict a significant increase in drone warfare activity in that war alone.
Add the additional conflicts popping up and I see the pricing for fiber going up the same way RAM did recently...

No, at least I hope so. My fellow readers are using it mostly to run through buildings and at most at campus ranges.
But more and more of the global supply ending on the battlefield will impact the use of my potential readers as well.

@masek My guess is, that fiber optical cable production is easier to scale then RAM chips. So the manufacturer can more easily increase the supply to match demand. Also it's easier for new joiners to enter that market.
My guess is that the required quality for those one-way drones isn't the highest so one could use older,cheaper and well known technology to produce them.

@hikhvar I don't think they can use "low quality" fiber. The range of fiber controlled drones is now reaching 50km
.And: every army of the world is in the process of realizing, that in case they don't have a very large stock of drones, they are totally fucked in a case of a ground war.
Only if you have complete air superiority, you may be able to do without.
