I haven't seen any discussion of e-bikes on here. Which is a bit of a surprise. But then again, we don’t have an algorithm to dictate the topic of the day, so maybe that’s why.

Anyway, what brands have worked for folks? I’m in Canada, west coast.

Ideally, can carry two adults up steep hills. I really like the look of the cargo bikes and was excited by Rad bikes, but saw one comment that the quality was poor and they are now insolvent??

Even if you like a brand I can’t get, I appreciate tips on “X feature really helped me because of Y” type of stuff, so that I know HOW to shop for these things.

@leroy I love my Tern GSD. We sold the car almost 3 years ago and I do everything on it; shopping, taking 2 cats to the vet, it handles everything very well. It’s well thought out and robust

@sinbad woah, they are pricey! Some models are even more expensive than my car!

I’ll keep my eye on them, but at that price I need something life changing (e.g. good contract job coming in or surprise baby).

Really like the colours on them though, bright yellow would add some sunshine to dreary grey winters here.

          Thanks!

@leroy I've been very happy with my mid-drive Velotric. Since mid-drive reuses the existing gearing means I can leverage more of the motor's assist for hill climbing or acceleration, either/or.

The downside is cost, but I also value the ability to change the rear tire without messing with the motor. More km's riding means more flats, but I haven't had an issue ever since installing Mr Tuffy tire liners.

@leroy I bought the basic one 😉 But looks like they’ve gone up in price quite a bit in the last few years 🙁

@litchralee does that mean you modified your existing bike to install to the mid-drive?

@sinbad I wouldn’t be surprised if tariffs have had an effect.

I have found two local manufacturers (Van and North Van). I should check them out. Price is about 30% of Tern from a quick browse. But not sure I’m comparing equivalent hardware.

@leroy No, I purchased a Velotric ebike locally and it has the motor mounted in the middle of the bike, rather than within the rear wheel. The latter is known as "hub drive" because the motor is inside the wheel's hub.
