Oh goodie: Daylight Savings Time again this weekend! For most of my life I've been a night person. But almost like clockwork when I turned 50, my body clock started waking me up when the sun comes up, which I resisted at first but have grown used to (it's actually my fav part of the day now). But I basically have to start going to bed an hour earlier after this Sunday because then I will be wide awake an hour earlier. I would be very happy if the US followed British Columbia's lead in permanently adopting daylight time. All this moving clocks and body clocks around is just silly in 2026.

Reactions range from applause to concern as March 8 will be the last time most British Columbians have to change their clocks, B.C. Premier David Eby announced Monday.

@jab01701mid Nice. I don't even really set an alarm anymore. If it's getting light out, I'm waking up. Night masks etc rarely help.

Agree with all of that, EXCEPT

        Permanent Standard Time.
        *NOT* permanent Daylight Time.

Standard time more closely matches our circadian rhythms.
        Studies abound.

Want adjustment? Change what we call "normal work hours" instead.

I'm with the abolish DST chorus, in favor of "sun time" which is what we've had since the beginning of time!

@lupus_blackfur @briankrebs Agreed. When we’re on daylight time, noon is at almost 2 PM for a lot of population centers. That’s absurd.

            Time should be descriptive.

@briankrebs I used to think it was called "Daylight Saving" because it's a gerund, but now I realize it's a singular noun, because no matter how hard you look there aren't multiple savings here.

@briankrebs I don't get all the complaining... maybe it would be less jarring if we moved the clocks by half an hour, 4 times a year! 😁

@briankrebs People will leave you alone more often first thing in the morning :). I don’t care which they choose, but wish they’d pick one. Businesses and agencies, etc will adapt to the clocks as they see fit either way.

@briankrebs I agree with abolishing the constant switching, but differ in that it should be standard time we switch to, not DST.

As someone who has a type of insomnia that causes my sleep to terminate early… I’ve had a countdown timer on my home screen telling me exactly how many days until DST.

If you wake somewhere between 3 and 5 am every day… you want the sun rise to be as early as possible.

Also, I fight some times to stay awake past 6pm… DST gives me a small chance at being able to do something involving friends after work.

                            @briankrebs

Daylight Savings Time is a lie. No time has been saved. More accurate would be Daylight Shifted Time. And it's a time waster having to reset all your clocks and watches.

DST is supported by businesses that claim consumers will be out and about during evening daylight hours. Money will be spent regardless of sunshine.

The effects of the time changes are documented including increased automobile collisions, heart attacks etc.

                            "Standard" infers the norm.

@briankrebs When daylight savings starts, sunset **AND** sunrise both become an hour later so if your sunrise is currently 6 AM, it will now be 7 AM meaning if you wake at sunrise, you actually get an extra hour's sleep.

Our daylight savings here ends in a month. Today's was at 7:08 AM, the 4th of April's will be at 7:37 AM. Daylight savings ends before dawn on the 5th of April and sunrise that day will be at 6:37 AM.

As I usually wake up before 6 AM, neither of these will affect my mornings, but c'est la vie.

Agree with all of that, EXCEPT

                                Permanent Standard Time.
                                *NOT* permanent Daylight Time.

Standard time more closely matches our circadian rhythms.
                                Studies abound.

Want adjustment? Change what we call "normal work hours" instead.

@briankrebs BC was apparently waiting for the US west coast states to do this and has given up waiting. WA, OR and CA I believe all have this on the books, waiting for congressional approval which never comes.

Apparently the federal legislation governing this allows states to go to year-round STANDARD time without federal approval, but not to year-round DST (per my reading of the Uniform Time Act on Wikipedia). I'm in favor of year round standard time, but no one listens to me.

This will be my first clock change since I retired and stopped setting an alarm. I wonder when I'll wake up Sunday morning?

@briankrebs I don't get all the complaining... maybe it would be less jarring if we moved the clocks by half an hour, 4 times a year! 😁

@briankrebs I agree with abolishing the constant switching, but differ in that it should be standard time we switch to, not DST.

@lorimolson @briankrebs I honestly don't know why people complain every year.

The clocks change themselves now, so there's even less to be bothered about.
