NEW: Democrats Demand Answers for Federal Prison Staffing Shortage After Corrections Officers Flee for ICE Jobs
The federal prison staffing shortage, exacerbated by corrections officers fleeing to ICE jobs, has contributed to more lockdowns, more violence and less access to recidivism-reducing programs, the lawmakers noted in their letter to the BOP director.

Citing a ProPublica investigation that found that workers at federal lockups had been lured away to ICE, lawmakers asked how the Federal Bureau of Prisons plans to address the agency’s “unsafe conditions” and “pervasive” shortages of critical staff.

@ProPublica Duh? Where did the fash think the population of men looking for a (mythical — apparently nobody’s getting paid the bonus) $35k sign-on bonus for (mis)handling people was going to come from? Medicaid recipients facing “work requirements”?

@ProPublica Much more important to incarcerate the law abiding immigrants than the scofflaw citizens.

@ProPublica well in good news, we now know who all the bad jail guards are that went and labeled themselves as reactionary racists by joining ICE.

@Heartofcoyote @ProPublica I just looked into this. Apparently, the sign-on bonuses are only for returning agents, but the recruitment ads just said "new recruits." They got bamboozled. The bonus is also in installments and comes with a commitment to five years of service. These guys are probably getting a little tired of the long hours and inconsistent/limited overtime pay. Maybe the chance to be cruel loses its shine when you're really exhausted? Hey, whatever it takes to get these guys to lose steam.
