Huh. So in NL, they mail everyone who’s eligible to vote a ticket to show at the door. My husband got one and I assumed I obviously wouldn’t get one because I’m not yet a citizen.

But I did get one! For the “neighborhood commission.” Just how low-stakes is it, that they invited the American? 😅

@0xabad1dea You promise not to overthrow the NL government by force via your NC vote? Please?

@0xabad1dea "We're going to try you out on a little local election, and if you don't try to buy the result or shoot everyone who votes for the other candidate we might trust you in a bigger one"?

@0xabad1dea when my dad (who is Irish) lived in France, he was entitled to vote in local elections, and European elections, but not national elections.

Same in the EU afaik. Made it interesting when I first volunteered as an election worker and we had 5 elections at once. Some of them local, some not.

@0xabad1dea For local elections, you don't have to citizen, just resident. National elections are a different story.

@spacehobo @0xabad1dea The rules for who can vote in the UK are not completely trivial and depend on nationality and your circumstances and what type of election it is. https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/who-can-vote-uk-elections (Not included in that page or the one it links to appear to be the rules for members of the House of Lords - perhaps the web page author assumed that they'd know the rules that applied to them.)

@0xabad1dea Yep, you can vote in municipal elections if you've lived in the country for more than 5 years. And you can also vote for the waterboard as soon as you become resident in NL. I encourage everyone who can to do it as it's one of the few ways we non-citizens can get representation

@spacehobo @0xabad1dea yeah, it seems pretty self-evident when you see it that residents should be able to influence their conditions

@codecat @0xabad1dea I actually think this is an EU wide thing? Not 100% sure but definitely in the whole country.

@0xabad1dea @spacehobo hahaha yeah I imagine. Most of us know absolutely nothing about our own residency and citizenship laws. Plenty of citizens think you can become a citizen simply by marrying a citizen, for example.
