and there are more tricks we can do with a full spectrum camera!! This photo of a flower contains UV as well, you can clearly see how the flower is much more vibrant and glowy than the other foliage. This is to attract bees and other insects that can also see UV light! So cool!

I ordered a UV filter to just take UV images, hope that that will reveal another vibrant, unknown to me world

@janamarie These are awesome! How does this translate to the sensor's RGB values? Does IR just end up increasing the red, and UV the blue?

@joshg that is a very good question actually. I am pretty sure that IR lifts all channels, meaning RGB up. I don't exactly know whether UV only lifts the blue channel or whether it also ups all channels. I would guess a bit more on the blue channel, but I really do not know what the exact mix here is. I will know a bit more when the ordered UV filter arrives!

went on another walk with my IR camera from my previous thread. Even managed to catch a few rays of sunlight in between the otherwise grey week.

It continuous to be a lot of fun and I slowly get the hang of focusing correctly! There are some image artifacts and out-of-focus regions at times, but that is okay with this 2011 camera.. 😄

The resulting photos also just keep blowing my mind, this is sooo good! Also there are some interesting observations, the concrete in the third photo does not reflect much, if any IR, while the foliage does. This is also something you can feel in the summer, while streets are incredibly hot, trees and grass usually are pretty chill as they do not absorb a lot of IR!

              @janamarie
              Beautiful images.... looks otherworldly.

My understanding about the leaves being cooler is because they absorb sunlight. Photosynthesis within the leaf converts carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates. Sunlight is converted to chemical energy rather than heat energy.

Without CO2, this would be impossible and plants would die. And the Earth would get hot fast on a sunny day.

@Earl almost! The wavelengths they absorb are not within the IR range, they reflect IR, that’s why they are cooler. They rather reflect the IR instead of absorbing it and heating up.

there is also a fun trick you can do! You can hue-shift the image a bit towards red to get an actual blue sky and yellow foliage. This still gives the appearance of a proper photo, it's actually a nice vibe

I also love how different leaves, different plants reflect different portions of (infrared) light. The big cypress looks so much different than the smaller tree infront

Also aa I love cypresses, idk, lovely trees

@janamarie Those are fantastic photos! They are reminding me of (possibly half-remembered, half-imagined) long ago childhood memories of the landscapes from “The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles” story, which one of our teachers read to us at school…

@janamarie They're great. It's good to see a perspective of a proper IR camera. A NoIR camera is available on a Pi but that's just a normal camera with no IR filter. It makes your IR shots feel semi-familiar (not a completely alien look) but they're not as intense. Certainly not the same. I love the vibrant pink leaves. Apparently a sign of a healthy plant. Thanks for sharing them.

went on another walk with my IR camera from my previous thread.

@Earl almost! The wavelengths they absorb are not within the IR range, they reflect IR, that’s why they are cooler. They rather reflect the IR instead of absorbing it and heating up.

@janamarie @Earl They are also actively cooled by transpiration - the photosynthesis process doesn't work if they get too hot.

and there are more tricks we can do with a full spectrum camera!!

@janamarie@mystical.garden Could you please try to take a photo of a pigeon in UV? Pigeons can see UV light and I'm just really curious how they appear to each other.

@janamarie what in aerochrome! It never occurred to me you could "fake" it with a digital sensor, fascinating! I must do some research 😯
