@gogmagog Pretty underrated band also
-
@samvarma I only just squeak into Gen X but this was the first CD I ever bought.

@danfairs Now listening to his first album, which is great too
-
@danfairs I remember it was maybe the first record that he did where he got an actual drummer and bass player on there. If I'm not mistaken on surfing and blue dream it was a drum machine and him playing bass
@samvarma That was definitely the case on Not Of This Earth. I can’t find my copy of Surfing right now, but on FIABD, there are a variety of bass and drum credits.

@danfairs Yeah Wikipedia actually says it was drum machine but then they overdubbed cymbals and high hats et cetera

@samvarma ah makes sense

@samvarma ah makes sense

@danfairs But man the budgets for those first three records were just so tiny

@samvarma yeah I think I heard an interview with Satch ages ago saying he spent basically all his money recording and releasing the first album!

Let's go #GenX
@samvarma Just before middle school started for me, this release from Pink Floyd arrived

-
@emily_rugburn Wow Apple Music actually does not have "loveless"
@samvarma holy shit. i musta downloaded like a decade ago. the tremelo ep came out either right before or after loveless and they have some if the songs retooled.
feed me with your kiss and you made me realise eps are
post-isnt anything. theyre still pretty noisy but not as ethereal as loveless -
@samvarma Just before middle school started for me, this release from Pink Floyd arrived

@samvarma And a year later - Oingo Boingo’s Only A Lad

-
@rowan_johnson Interesting because I always think of Dookie as their classic, but for many it's probably this
@samvarma @rowan_johnson one is for Teenage Green Day and the other is for Grown Up Green Day
-
@samvarma Sting 'Soul Cages' circa 1991

@Exposedpig @samvarma this was also a huge one for me

@samvarma @NigelTufnel Born in 82, so I’m an elder millennial. Still, album covers were big in my formative years as well.
I’m sad this band doesn’t get as much nostalgia generally as I think they deserved. Ed E Rolland will always be one of my songwriting heroes.

-
@geoffduncan I do remember that story. Also crazy how much chorus they had in their guitar sound!
@samvarma
It varied, but yeah: the shadow of the Roland Jazz Chorus was getting very long. That album also has pitch-shifted/processed drums. So, you know, Phil Collins' shadow.

@NigelTufnel Fuck this was a heavyweight wasn't it
-

@samvarma Dookie was hugely successful, but it didnt get adapted into a broadway musical.

Without checking any numbers, I feel like American Idiot was way more successful and had a bigger, longer-lasting impact on our culture.

@rowan_johnson Yeah man it's definitely one of the only really protest albums of this century, and has several stone cold classics on it
-

@danfairs Blue dream is awesome... listening now

@RyanHyde @NigelTufnel Never gave them a chance beyond what was on the radio... going to fix that
-
@bellforin My favourite is Somewhere In Time, I have found all the others to be kind of hit or miss… Although there are absolute monster classics on every single album
