Myth: Women are better multitaskers than men & more efficient at keeping track of competing things. Research shows that none of us can multitask. Multitaskers are good at task switching, which burns through cognitive capacity & drains energy.

@amydiehl It is interesting how close this is to how computers do multitasking: For the longest time, they also could not do two things in parallel, so they switch between tasks very fast. But of course, they also have to switch contexts which takes some computational effort 🙂

@amydiehl @matthewskelton We are not better at it. But if we don’t handle it we face worse consequences than men for saying no so we end up doing more of it.

@amydiehl We can conclude from this that the human brain shares some properties with von Neumanns architecture.

@PizzaDemon @amydiehl Only scenario where task switching has a positive effect is when you're stuck on one task and need to zoom out to discover a different approach to it.

@amydiehl yep. No such thing as "male brains" and "female brains", they're just brains, with the same capabilities.

@amydiehl I have known this for some years. Also, research has shown that the more someone thinks they are good at multitasking, the worse they are at it. It's those of us that are aware of our shortcomings that can do better, just like most spheres of life.

@amydiehl every time I hear “women (or men) are naturally….” I question whether that’s cultural not natural.

@GentlemanTech @amydiehl or even just an excuse to unload something onto a woman (or man).

@amydiehl OH I think you are off there as women have the gumption to look after children and do other things and just get things done .. if called being efficient...
