It has survived two winters, and to be honest, I was not holding out much hope in 2026 before the first tiny leaves showed up.
@Nickiquote I have a hobby I call "elaborate weeding" which involves trying to make bonsai out of saplings found in the lawn and inevitably killing them. so two years of oak is an impressive feat!

@Nickiquote where do you keep it? How do you winter it? In a basement?
I have an oak too in a pot, and I say they are perhaps the most beautiful trees I've ever encountered. All other trees are of course beautiful, but I've grown to love oaks.

I have an oak too in a pot, and I say they are perhaps the most beautiful trees I've ever encountered. All other trees are of course beautiful, but I've grown to love oaks.
@jaaska It has been out on the patio and inside the conservatory without much logic except that I’m mainly worried about the ants getting at it. They’ve previously destroyed two potted fruit trees.

@Nickiquote I planted mine in autumn 2024, it sprouted in January 2025. Only in July that year I moved it outdoor onto my balcony (first pic). The second pic is from October 2025, just before I transplanted it to a nearby park which is part of the university campus. So it definitely helped a lot to keep in a warm and cosy space.

@Nickiquote But it also might be that our oaks are different varieties, with different growth rates?

@Nickiquote May this oak grow and flourish, with eventually it's boughs weighing on bloom and blossom, ants leaving this young sapling in peace.

@Nickiquote I have an apricot seedling that is in its second year as well. I live in the California Central Valley, so summers here are quite brutal while the winters are mild. I've had to hide the pot behind a much larger pot to keep the sun off of it so it doesn't cook, but otherwise it seems perfectly happy despite the heat. It'll probably be ready for transplanting into the yard in 2-3 more years.

@Nickiquote @jaaska can you put a circle of diatomaceous earth around the trunk? That might discourage the ants
