    Turning into summer quickly over here. Listening to the local garden radio show and it is a wealth of long-term local gardening information. They said that the number of chill hours (below 32) needed for fruit trees was substantially less than previous records — tracked over 40 years. Plus some squirrelly temperature disparities using a different chill hour calculation method (Utah method). https://davisgardenshow.com/DavisGardenShow20260305.mp3 #gardening #Climate

      @hisstogramma It's amazing here (in Southern California, which is substantially less than 500 chill hours under normal climate conditions), they sell many 750-1500 chill hour fruit trees at the home centers. Almost zero chance of fruiting.

          @hisstogramma I always wonder how many cherry trees, apple trees, pear trees, peach trees, etc. which are here and have never ever fruited for people. And now, unlikely they ever will except maybe if there are some very wild swings in temperature (ie chill to heatwave years lol)

            @ai6yr @hisstogramma

            I'm quite interested in starting a local group that will help people pick fruit and nut trees that will be correct for the climate once they mature.

            Michigan winters have changed dramatically in the 13 years I've lived here, and that's not a whole lot of time for many fruit trees and not nearly enough for a bigger tree like a paw paw or nut tree to mature.

              @MCDuncanLab @ai6yr @hisstogramma I can't see what's above this comment, but if this is a "resources please?" post, just wanted to ask if I can offer anything. I'm putting together models for public/more fruit trees so I have this big file of people who are good to talk to about various aspects of the problem, and I'm happy to share anything relevant.
