everything else aside, this whole thing is a great demonstration of why diplomacy is a profession. when you have two sides that are literally killing each other, you need careful and elaborate rituals to demonstrate and ensure good faith, and you need mature, trustworthy people with deep experience to manage that process. otherwise, you get [gestures widely] this.
