The first section of trail to be constructed specifically for the Appalachian Trail was blazed in this park. Harriman State Park in 1983 is a sad, lovely place that is just too close to a major metropolitan area: New York City. The woods are mature, open and airy, and filled with stately old trees. All this beauty just makes the large amounts of trash strewn all over the forest more depressing. -

I saw a couple of deer along the trail today, but no views worth mentioning. The tall trees and their high canopy of leaves kept the underbrush from growing along the trail, so it was well-cleared, for a change. There were a lot of stiff little climbs, though, and many scrambles over rocky outcrops. From my book Then the Hail Came (A Humorous and Truthful Account of a 1983 Appalachian Trail Thru-hike).
