Alberta renters, can you help?
Our 12 month lease agreement is set for renewal on June 1st, and each year prior we’ve gotten a letter on March 1st to renew.
Nothing yet this year.
What does this mean?
My rental experience has been primarily in BC, and I understand there are many differences here but I’m unsure how to approach this.Should I assume it’ll go month to month? Should I assume they want us to move out? Should I talk to my landlord?
I don’t want really any of those things so… lol any help is appreciated!

I kinda wish this happens but I also don’t want to be served an eviction notice. I’m unsure what happens at the end of an AB 12 month least if they don’t send any sort of 90 notice. My autism is not having fun with this. Running in circles in my head! 🫠

@britt understandable! If you've got a rental ombudsman there I'd suggest reaching out for guidance first before opening yourself up to being bullied by your landlord

#YEG@britt landlords are required to give 90 days notice of a rent increase in Alberta. Though that hasn't meant anything to any of the landlords I've ever had.
It's probably worthwhile to follow up with them now, just so you don't have a last minute surprise.

#YEG@britt I would reach out. Quick search hints that if you have an end date in the lease, without a renewal you are expected to be out by the end.

I'm going to guess here but unless your contract specifies it must be renewed I wouldn't worry about it. Never the less talk to the landlord or rental company and ask, this ones always a winner. You can read your rights and responsibilities below.

I'm going to guess here but unless your contract specifies it must be renewed I wouldn't worry about it. Never the less talk to the landlord or rental company and ask, this ones always a winner. You can read your rights and responsibilities below.

#YEG@britt What does your lease say specifically? Most of my rental experience is also in BC but they all said in writing the lease became month-to-month after the year was complete.
From what I’ve read for Alberta they have to give you at least 3 months notice in writing if they are selling it.

our building is owned by a corporation… so I imagine maybe they just forgot. They really like us and this is the first time since we moved here that we’ve heard nothing. In AB, I think they expect you to move at the end of your lease unless you renew. We just renewed every year prior based on the paperwork they delivered to our door March 1st. It’s weird to get nothing.. eeep.
