Canada failed Jesse Van Rootselaar and Tumbler Ridge. We need better mental health services.
---
The red flag laws, for example, were designed to ensure that people in crisis do not have access to weapons. But this process seems to have failed Tumbler Ridge. Why our system allowed these guns back into the Van Rootselaar’s home is a question which demands answers.
We should also want to know whether Van Rootselaar was truly receiving the mental health supports which she clearly needed. In recent years, I have spoken to numerous front-line practitioners who are responsible for counselling those radicalized to violence. They are unanimous: The Government of Canada is not doing enough to provide support programs for those at risk of committing these kinds of attacks.
Justin Ling: In the face of horror in Tumbler Ridge, these are the questions we need to be asking
Van Rootselaar’s social media history doesn’t explain why the shooting occurred. But it hints at how it might have been prevented.
