Louise Arbour is to be named Vice-Regal by Prime Minister Carney, replacing Mary Simon after her 5 year term.
I know Mary Simon attracted legitimate criticism for not being fluent in both official languages. But she was fluent in her own Indigenous language (Inuk), and that in itself was very powerful. She brought her lived experience as an Inuk elder and stateswoman from the remote Arctic shores of Québec to the highest office of the land. She did her job with honour and respect and I believe that is how she should be remembered.
I hope when the next Indigenous GG is appointed, that they are fluent in English, French and their own language... or even better... that it is less of a controversy because we are all more secure in our individualities within Canada.

@chris I think the best choice for a governor general would have been someone who would only use First Nations languages in official communications, and snub the English and French communities.
But I dream of better worlds than the one I got.
