The new leader must be able to motivate these new members and allow for new, different ways of organizing between elections. One of the most demotivating things new members can hear is “that’s not how we do things.”

The Liberal Party, who have a free membership option, signed up 400,000 people during their leadership race a year ago.
For the NDP to have 100,000 paid members isn't too shabby by comparison.
