Pierre Poilievre has announced his plan to rescue the Canadian auto manufacturing industry.
Basically it means mirroring the US emissions regulations (or lack thereof), match the US tariffs on China, for every Canadian car produced let a car from the US and Mexico by the same manufacturer in duty free, and remove the GST on Canadian built cars.
His plan doesn’t address one big issue:
“U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration have levied tariffs on the auto industry, saying they want to force vehicle manufacturers to move their production to the United States.”

The Globe has a follow up article on how deluded Poilievre is about preserving Canada’s auto industry while Trump is in power.
“Mr. Poilievre argued on Sunday that U.S. automakers will want to keep open access to sell cars in Canada so imposing that old auto-pact rule ‘is how we’re going to get the United States to agree to removing tariffs.’
But Mr. Trump hasn’t given a hoot for the billions that U.S. automakers are losing because of his trade policies. He isn’t out to protect their profits. He is using tariffs to press them to move plants and jobs from Canada to the U.S. And he, too, has said that Canadian car plants are doomed if he keeps tariffs in place.
Mr. Poilievre still seems to underestimate Mr. Trump’s trade threats.”

Opinion: Poilievre arrives late to the auto debate with a plan from 1965
It’s as if the Conservative Leader can’t believe the happy days are gone and thinks a simple plan will bring them back
