finished work on the dance-off scene, for now. it's a bit of a long excerpt, but dangit, some scenes need a little more buildup to make the payoff worth it.
context: Luce and Eleanor are on the run together, and aiming to cross the Channel to the continent. the ship leaves in two days, and they don't have enough money for the fare, and a few nights at the inn. a local loudmouth named Crosby has been daring passersby to wager against him in a dance-off, and he has already bested several challengers. now Eleanor decides to throw down everything in her purse, and wipe that smug look off Crosby's face into the bargain.
'As the sun fell, the shadows flickering upward from the lantern gained the quality of roving spirits, and the scene transformed into something out of time, along the likes of devils come to Georgia and queens who danced themselves to death.'
