@AnnaAnthro It will not change a thing. If I remember correctly, 10 years are needed for a project of aluminium plant (from the idea to production).

@fdastous @AnnaAnthro ça lui donnera bonne conscience en pouvant dire à sa base : « Bois voyez? Ce sont eux, les méchants, qui refusent de contribuer à faire tourner notre économie! La récession, c’est de leur faute! »

@AnnaAnthro This falls in line with bringing up the alcohol "bans"... It's just another non-negotiation tactic so that the US can pretend they are involved. Have to keep playing to the base even while anyone who understands what's going on knows that it is BS.

In particular, steel and aluminum are two of the most energy expensive things to refine. Canada has 10 aluminum processing plants. Nine in Quebec and one in BC. Basically all powered by Hydro electricity. They're not even all Canadian owned, they're just located there because that's where the energy is.

So if these companies agreed to set up a new plant in the US tomorrow, and then I could weave a magic wand and have an entire full plant appear the following day, it would do nothing. It would not have enough electricity to operate. And it would be at the back of a gigantic line of people who need electricity. They would be fighting AI data centers for power.

Like the more you know about this, the more stupid it sounds.
