Environment and Climate Change Canada is permanently turning off Weatheradio broadcasts across Canada on March 16.

Maybe I'm just sadder than I should be about this (every night I get my forecasts, including AQI reports, from this service), but it also seems short sighted.

Climate collapse is causing more and more extreme weather events that require emergency alerts. The Internet (and their continued reliance on X) becomes a single-point-of-failure for disseminating timely national weather forecasts and weather emergency alerts. This is problematic for all kinds of reasons.

ECCC's site doesn't provide any other information about it but I'm assuming this is part of Carney's broad cuts to public services and infrastructure in Canada. Sad.

This is what I got back when I wrote to the department:
" Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding the discontinuation of Weatheradio and Hello Weather. We understand that these services have been important sources of information for many Canadians. The technology used to operate Weatheradio and Hello Weather is obsolete, leading to increasing costs and challenges with maintaining the service. As a result, ECCC has made the decision to discontinue these services. As part of our modernization efforts, we are focusing on strengthening and expanding more viable services.
Weather alerts continue to be issued through multiple channels, including weather.gc.ca, the WeatherCAN mobile application, Canadian television and radio broadcasters, and the National Public Alerting System (Alert Ready). Continual expansion of cellular service coverage and increasing availability of satellite internet are also improving access to timely weather information, including in remote areas. "
