Prime Minister Carney and I had a warm and productive first conversation today.

I shared the NDP’s concerns about the cost-of-living crisis facing Canadians, including the creepy practice of surveillance pricing.

I raised the urgent need to stop the privatization of health care by dusting off and actually enforcing the Canada Health Act. And I reiterated our position that Canada must take a clear moral stand against illegal wars (and the countries that start them) in this age of impunity.

It was a forthright and friendly exchange — and it made me feel encouraged about the prospects of a little old school respectful political debate in this country.

Maybe I’m just nostalgic for the kind of politics I've watched my parents practice throughout their lives — always soft on people, hard on the issues. I think that’s what the country needs right now.

But honestly? I don’t see politics in terms of access to the powerful. Making the changes we need depends on how much momentum we can build behind solutions that confront power and benefit the 99%.

That’s the real work. And it’s going to take all of us.

@avilewis I wish you had worn an N95 mask to show all #PeopleWithDisabilities that you care more than other politicians about #DisabledLives & are against #eugenics in #PublicHealth policies. We have been failed by every single political party in Canada & are treated like none of our lives matter to any of you politicians.

Hey @avilewis do your old pals Jeremy and @tonymcquailgreenprogressive a favour and bring this up next time you talk to him. #yellowknife city council passed this resolution on #ProportionalRepresentation unanimously yesterday and I hear that a copy was sent to #PMCarney this morning and to minister of Crown Indigenous Relations, Rebecca Alty. You can mention that every one of her former colleagues on council voted for it. #cdnpoli #canpoli

@avilewis it would be great if he would address Alberta's use of the non withstanding clause to strip human rights from trans youth and their families. His silence *and* doing a photo op with Daniel the next day was beyond words disappointing.

@avilewis Bonnie Henry removing mask mandates resulted in my Dad getting infected by #unmasked hospital staff. He died from covid cardiac arrest in 2023. This was government sanctioned #murder by #eugenics policies. Every single political party has failed to protect citizens, especially most vulnerable ones. Every single politician has normalized eugenics. That will end up costing provincial & federal governments, millions, if not billions to deal with long covid & many other preventable health issues. You have an opportunity to do better & lead by a more humane, not eugenics, living example. Start by normalizing wearing masks indoors again.

@avilewis Any politician who truly cares about wellbeing of all citizens, not just the lives of privileged people, would spearhead much better, preventative public health policies. A sustainable workforce, requires a strong rather healthy population. How every political party/politician here has normalized getting infected with covid multiple times - when that's preventable - is not true leadership. Long covid disabilities have hampered a lot of prior workforce & is continuing to strip more people from workforce. Not a single political party has any idea on how to deal with increasing funds needed to help newly disabled folks - who are unable to keep working with their long covid issues & with other medical issues triggered by covid infections like TB, Lyme disease, neurological dysfunctions & multiple organs damages - to name but a few that has been directly attributed to covid infections.

Will you wait until you or someone you deeply love to die or become disabled from covid, before you step up to lead by example? You'd be the first & millions of us would support you with leading better, by living example & demonstrating your words are not empty but you actually do care about disabled folks & every citizen, even most of you who normalized covid - when it should've never been normalized.

@avilewis Thank you for all of this. I hope that actual enforcement of the health act could at least slow down the dismantling of the public system here in Alberta. With the provincial government discussing gerrymandering to entrench themselves further, we could really use some help.

@PhoenixSerenity @avilewis@mstdn.ca The fact that his wife literally just days ago tried to pinpoint the “tail end of Covid” as November 2023 says to me that we shouldn’t even expect acknowledgment from the NDP that Covid is a current, ongoing public health crisis.

@thatkatharine That's messed up. That was mere months after my Dad died from hospital acquired covid. She's not a medical expert either. Not the first well known public leftist who has claimed #covid is over when it never ended.
