Linda McQuaig sets it out clearly. Privatization is great for investors, lousy for the public. The only question is: Is Mark Carney here for Canadians or for foreign investment corporations?

Continued Liberal ambiguity about this is causing anxiety we do not need right now..

Linda McQuaig: Privatizing our airports won’t keep air travel affordable — just look at how Highway 407 is playing out

Highway 407 is an example of ruinous privatization. There is also well-documented evidence of problems with hundreds of airport privatizations around the world.

@hamishb It’s infuriating. It’s the same stupidity happening at the provincial level. Airports are at best tangential, if not irrelevant, to the major challenges facing Canada and Canadians. It’s a distraction. Politicians seem universally incapable of identifying and focusing on real priorities. They want the appearance of doing something, while doing as little as possible. And it works, because every voter and interest group has their hobbyhorse. So just jump from one to the next, endlessly, and leave everything else to fall apart or explode. If it’s not a crisis—doesn’t have to be real, just manufactured—then it gets ignored.
