Climate Justice Toronto & York South-Weston Tenant Union are joining forces.
After years of organizing, challenging rent hikes, fighting off renovictions, and demanding that housing be treated as a human right, not an investment vehicle, we are doing something historic.
We are building our city-wide tenant union called Toronto Tenant Union.
On Saturday, April 18th, from 10am to 4pm, we will gather at Bishop Marrocco School (1515 Bloor St West) for the Toronto Tenant Union Founding Convention. Lunch and raccoon snacks will be provided. Childcare available on site!
Join us https://www.tenantunion.ca/convention
This isn’t just a meeting. This is the moment we take our building-wide petitions, and our collective organizing and connect them into a democratically-run, fighting organization that landlords and politicians can’t ignore.
We are coming together across every neighborhood to declare that we won’t be pushed out of our city, and our homes are not for profit.

@TenantsUnionTO at the risk of being oppositional; having an expectation for tenant behavior in your ‘constitution’ would make it more difficult to dismiss your positions. Having had way more positive experiences with tenants does not make up for the negative ones. Abuse, disrespect, destruction, dealers and other issues do happen getting both parties to recognize and acknowledge that (and support its reduction) is key to moving forward. Removing large corporations from the equation may also help.

@Rickd6 We definitely wanna decommodify housing & have it enforced & respected as a basic human right where everyone has their house so we don't have to deal with landlords. It's our founding convention where we'll be deciding on our structure & vision, you're most welcome to join us this Saturday to have your voice heard. You need to be a member for that, learn more & sign up here: https://www.tenantunion.ca/convention

@TenantsUnionTO thanks for the information and invite. I’m not in Toronto and can’t appreciate the issues with renting in such a large city. As a small landlord the impact of one bad tenant may be devastating, as a tenant poor care and upkeep by a landlord can be also. I wish you all the best. In Europe the vast majority rent for life and keep up their homes. Larger landlords in Canada seem to maximize profits over longevity. Perhaps a renters verification group would help- proven reliable renters make maintenance bills, payments etc less ?
