Is there any sort of protocol on how to gracefully terminate a fediverse instance or do I just shut it down and go "we're offline now lol" and ¯\_(ツ)_/¯?

I'm asking because I set up a Pixelfed instance for my gf a while back and the software seems pretty awful and so we haven't really used it and we decided it's better to drop it than to sink money and time and effort into the hosting.
