Why do my best ideas for "Wings of Quiet Longing" come to me just before I fall asleep?

Why do my best ideas for "Wings of Quiet Longing" come to me just before I fall asleep? Conversations or quotes, ideas for scenes, you name it. I swear to god, I had to make about 10 notes on my phone last night. Every time I closed my eyes, I thought of something new. Am I alone here?
@floofpaldi hehe, ain't that always the way? Definitely not just a you thing!

@therivercrow At least I'm not alone! Practically every night, that happens. It's so great but also incredibly annoying.

-
@bytebro I think that's awesome. That is really cool. The only difference with me, really, is that I won't remember the ideas once I wake up, so I have to write them down then and there, otherwise they're gone. I'm just sleepy enough to completely forget them later. I usually just groan, roll over, and reach for my phone lol.

@floofpaldi I woke up the other night and in the half hour before I drifted back to sleep I had a great idea for the ending of the WIP I'm outlining.
Stupid me didn't note it down.
I remember having the great idea. What that idea was is lost.

@floofpaldi There's actually a science answer for that. Has to do with the chemical shift in your brain as you're gearing up to goto sleep. That sort of "soft spot" in consciousness, dream chemistry is ramping up but you're still holding on to full conscious.
If you don't get up, and at least write some notes to spur your memory on, that data is dumped. It never makes it past immediate processing (or only fragmentary) to be tagged by the secondary neural transmitters for long term storage.

@floofpaldi Often, I try to take note and keep such thoughts on my mind!

@floofpaldi@mindly.social nope, not alone at all. it's why I keep a dictaphone on my bedside table (I need to be able to use it in the dark without falling in the trap of getting distracted, so that rules out using my phone)

@Emmacox Oh no! I want to cry for you, seriously. That has to be the worst feeling in the entire world. I'm going to cross my fingers that the idea will return to you some night but write it down this time when it does. You're so clever, so it'll come back. Arms, legs, fingers, all crossed for you!

@retech Okay, that's the most fascinating bit of information I've learned in a while. You're just a plethora of interesting facts and I absolutely love it. Thanks for clueing me in!
I guess it's a good thing that I'm always giving in, groaning and grumbling, and rolling over to reach out for my phone to write my ideas down.

@robbienorlyn Me too. I'm always giving in and taking notes, otherwise I'll forget by the morning.

@thegoblinwitch That's a brilliant idea. For me, it's just my phone but I keep it on "bedtime mode," so everything's black and white and easier on the eyes. Then it's off to sleep for me.

I keep thinking I made notes, and it turns out I just had a boring lucid dream about making notes about ideas I had.

@HeliaXyana Oh my god! That's the craziest thing I've ever heard. It's all very Inception-esque, don't you think? I'm so sorry that happened.

Last night's ideas have prompted me to finally sit down and work on a new chapter. We're doing this!

@HeliaXyana @floofpaldi heh. Staring at the keyboard this morning. Sure I had an important detail flash through my brain last night.
Ugh. (I have a hellacious cold.) was it just a fever dream?
Coffee resurrected it. It was a nuanced - between the commas - little thing. And. It was real.

Ha, yeah, well, I'm pretty used to the whole lucid dreaming thing, but the missing notes mystery took me a while to figure out. I thought my notes app was broken or something, so went with pen and paper, but it kept happening. It took me waaaay too long to figure out I wasn't actually taking notes, just dreaming about taking notes. I'd be a rubbish detective.

I wake frequently thinking I've written something until it reaches my foggy brain there no computer there.

@floofpaldi I forget my funniest shitposts this way! Either that or I sit up to post them, and then I get insomnia!

@floofpaldi Sort of a dumping ground for stuff in my head. I adopted a rule when I was 8: learn something new every day and memorise it. And do not go to bed until you do.
BTW, chemically in the noggin, it is very similar to the "great idea in showers" phenomenon. Tired, super relaxed, brain wanders easily.
Kind of amazing how good the brain is at taking a shitload of data, cross pollinating it, and generating new ideas.

@floofpaldi nooope you're not.
