I spoke with a case manager at the center where my psych meds provider is located to ask about subsidized housing near where the family property is located in Florida. My options were have somebody read me a list or come by and get a paper copy. I asked about email. She said, we don't use email. Which is usually code for, I can email my colleagues but not clients. So I enabled call recording on my iPhone and let this lady read out her paper list with a thick accent. Welcome to Florida in 2026, lovelies.
For context, I wasn't looking at housing here because after I'm certified as a voice writer, I plan on traveling to and from the US often enough that I didn't want to pay for a rental I won't be in for months at a time. But Mum wants me to look for disability housing. So, I made a call partially so she will shut the heck up. And if by chance I'm not working by the time my name comes up on some wait list, well that will be just gravy.

@Rosalyn Oh wow. Crap experience, but i would love to hear more about voice writer things.. and your up and coming travels/adventures.

@crimson Voice writing is a modern form of stenography. It's used in any case where having a transcript of what somebody said is useful. The biggest fields where it's used right now are court reporting, captioning, and cart providing, which is transcribing lectures for the deaf. The hard part is using a stenomask, but it's also the coolest part, imo. A stenomask is a microphone with a built-in muffler. The goal is to not be heard within more than two feet away from the voice writer. I'm now in the 225 wpm speed building class, which is the final class in my certification program.

@Rosalyn Ah ok. It’s called voice writing - neat!! I am always watching court cases and have always had so many questions about the equipment, technique and procedures. I used to work in c caption!

@crimson Yeah, captioners can be on an open mic if their environment permits it. But voice writing court reporters have to be on mask when reporting in person instead of remotely. And that's just to ensure there are no disturbances during court proceedings. Why did you stop captioning, if I can ask?
