‘A blaring alarm’ issued for Colorado River as heat wave melts snow early

The Colorado River system’s immediate outlook got even worse this week when federal forecasters downgraded the expected inflows into Lake Powell to just 27 percent of average. At the beginning of the month, that number was 36 percent of average. This year has brought the third lowest mid-March projection on record, with only 1.75 million acre-feet expected to flow into the Lake Powell between April and July.

Runoff into Lake Powell could be the third lowest on record, according to the latest projections from federal hydrologists, causing concern for Lake Mead.
