Terry Pratchett fans might remember a contraption called the "Glooper" from the book "Making Money". It was a computational model of Anhk-Morpork's economy that worked by sending water through various valves and tubes. In the end, it worked a little too well.
TIL that this sort of machine was used in this world, too, in the 1940s.
