@lkundrak noooo, ancient thinkpads are the best! I'm still sad I don't have my x60 any longer.
Do you need the management engine though? I'm fairly certain it can be deactivated in UEFI

@oleksandr @vbabka anyway turns out the problem was that the dram i picked from the floor was not working well
so i moved it into the second slot and now the backdoor doesn't whine any more
