i wish plant-based faux meat was cheaper than animal-based real meat.

@goaty a frustration I have is zhat I expected zhose faux-meat prices to stay static when beef prices skyrocketed, not too long ago, since prices of peas and such were *not* going up... and instead it was always a bit more expensive zhan beef. and since price on it was *going up,* I got convinced ze idea was to maintain Impossible and Beyond as "premium vegan options" and zheir goal isn't to make sustainable burgers
imagine if zhat surge in meat prices during early COVID years had led to folks trying Beyond patties because zhey were literally cheaper zhan real beef, and finding out zhey taste great? how many unlikely converts to "zhese are fine really you just make 'em too dang expensive" zhey'd get...
@yaodema literally, like i've had impossible burgers before (nothing else yet) and they're fine! i can tell the difference (it's a bit drier than bovine), but it's small enough that the faux is beyond "tolerable" and well into "good"
-
i'll never ever in a million billion years go vegan cause i love dairy too much and vegetarian would be a massive struggle given my food issues, but i'd be fine with eating less meat if i could replace/supplement it with something that's as nice and as nutrient-dense
my one non-financial concern with plant-based faux meat is that the human body processes plant proteins less efficiently than animal proteins, but i don't know if there's some caveat that makes the faux-meat different? haven't actually looked it up cause i can't afford it either way

what i'd really love is lab-grown animal meat. i've got no qualms about eating beef or chicken or pork that was cultured in a controlled environment instead of the ongoing nightmare that is industrial agriculture. my two caveats:
- it's gotta taste good, and i know lab-grown fat is less easy than lab-grown muscle
- it's gotta be comparable in price to regular meat

while we're at it… gimme lab-grown cow milk. i don't mind soy milk but it's just not the same!

i wish plant-based faux meat was cheaper than animal-based real meat. i would immediately buy mostly that (and probably blend it with animal meat cause it's not quite as good, but i think if you balance it right it would be great)
i've tried the impossible "beef" and it really is fine! but it costs more since beef is so heavily subsidized, and i can't afford to go for it
@goaty you can tbh thank maga men for that. they bought out (most) vegan food factories and tho it costs pennies to make the shit they keep the price high and wages low while workers get heat exhaustion lung inflammation trench foot or just straight up kill themselves
oh or the one guy who put the char oil (makes faux meat taste grilled) on his cheeks to hide he was smoking from his girl and they burned a hole in his face
or the time the supervisor decided a bird in the factory could only be dealt w by crushing it to death w a broom
litelife foods everybody!!

@goaty the city of turners falls fined them for illegal waste dumping out back.
rather than stop dumping, they elect to pay the fine regularly and just poison the environment

@goaty the night crew literally left cocaine out on the breakroom table more than once
one lady was so overworked n hated it so much she would regularly drop metal objects into the product that was going thru the metal detector screening just to shut everything down n get a break. pennies, screws, whatever she had. she blamed it on a ghost. i am not even joking around.
some prisoners on temp work release came to the plant to help out. after one day literally all of them told the prison they would rather be in their cell all day, and refused to come back. prisoners. prisoners felt the conditions at litelife were intolerable.

on one hand, free coke…
on the other, everything else you said,
also i'm not surprised tbh, generally any work release they're sending prisoners to is a fucking nightmare. i'm sure you've heard about the chicken factories

@goaty the food plant floor supervisor's prior job was... the manufacturing floor at smith & wesson
this is what happens when boomer hippies sell their legacy for a cozy retirement.

@goaty oh god yes
my cousin was involved in a civil rights suit (shes a lawyer) getting wages back for a poultry farm chain that was for decades abusing and misusing men in the community who had intellectual or developmental issues. "turkey house boys" worked long hours fuckin up their hands and arms living in crowded shacks for pennies, cuz they were kept isolated & so didnt know they were being manipulated and robbed...

@goaty ill prob keep remembering horror stories all day. i know the floor was incredibly toxic for women, one lady WHO HAD CANCER was treated so badly she would be crying literally every day. til she quit
her boyfriend at one point experienced liver failure and yet was coming in to work bc they werent planning on giving him any recovery leave. he was so, so jaundiced.
