Q4: How much of your work is inspired by outside influences and how much is pure imagination?
A4: I suppose it depends on what I’m doing. I’ve done a lot of Star Trek makes which is an even split I’d say. Then there’s my record player, which other than a vague design in my head, I pretty much made up as I went along!

@MakersHour Pretty much everything I make comes from some kind of outside inspiration, I have a terrible imagination. But the inspiration I need can be fairly minimal, like the one word prompts for my textile art challenge, or a half remembered image of something.

@MakersHour A4 hmmm, I copy things or make interpretations of things but I use my imagination a lot when making as well. I think I am a mixed bag! #MakersHour

I'm going to say "both, 50/50", because I come up with ideas, but then base the execution of them of stuff I see - either real life objects for miniaturing, or patchwork patterns I see on YouTube for quilting.

Q4: outside influence?
A4: it's at least 90% influence. I'm not that creative except perhaps in how I connect or remix things. My current project is inspired by movies and games in concept, and by a bar on my block in color scheme. My primary making years ago was cosplay, which is all about recreating an influence.

@tschundler @MakersHour Yeah but the thing about recreating is that it also takes a lot of imagination. I did a set of kitchen furniture inspired by Charles Rennie Macintosh. It is fairly convincing for a 1/12th scale copy of the real thing but actually took a lot of thought to work it all out in scale.

A4 at risk of going deeply philosophical. Everything we experience influences our actions and imagination. So whilst we might not appreciate a direct link from something we saw, smelt, touched, 20 years ago, on something we make now, the link is there.
That said, museums, YouTube, and books are where I get a lot of my inspiration from....
