    Did you know that #systemd already has `emailAddress`, `realName`, and `location` fields? but they where never meant for home users, only enterprise workflows, so adding `birthDate field` isn't really much work, and you could see why systemd doesn't consider that bloat

    And this is exactly why systemd is bloated because it doesn't consider lots of things to be bloat in the first place

    It's never a good idea to rely on software that serves corporations best interests, because corporations care about profit not principles, #FOSS principles.

      @levi I’m not sure those fields really support any real corporate use case either. Most corporations are going to have some other more centralized system to track that kind of information, like LDAP/Active Directory/Exchange/etc. It makes no sense for each computer to have that info entered separately in a corporate environment.

        @levi this is kind of a nonsense complaint though, particularly when you consider that the GECOS field is traditionally divided into real name, phone number, and office location — but I don’t see anyone complaining that passwd is bloated and serves corporate interests.

        People just like to whine about systemd.

          @rayk I agree, but then.. I think it's for "convenience" perhaps 🤷

            @benjamineskola No, they don't! there's plenty of things to complain about and people have made whole websites on the matter.

            what I was getting at is Age verification and the fact that some contributors to systemd are in favor of that, mainly because they want Linux to be compliant, so corporations keep using it.. doesn't that serve corporate interest and go against FOSS principles?

            Also, I don't see any Age verification mechanisms discussed on passwd, which makes me think we have different definitions on what is "bloat"?(something to be expected)

              @levi There are good reasons to complain about systemd but there are also bad reasons. You complained about ‘email address’ field etc. These are bad reasons.

              I don’t like to prioritise corporate interests, but if the corporate usecase doesn’t harm real people’s needs then I don’t see it as an issue worth complaining about.

              I don’t like age verification but this is not a problem invented by the systemd developers and blaming them for it is silly IMO.
