I mostly know the German apartment rental market from the tenant side. Finding an apartment was always a pain, especially since I frequently had to move to distant parts of Germany.

However, after inheriting an apartment five years ago(*), I also gained a perspective from the landlord side. I put out an ad for the apartment on Wednesday morning, and so far 23 people have expressed an interest, and 13 people have confirmed an appointment for viewing the apartment.

While having this many prospective tenants to choose from is technically great from a landlord perspective, it's also a bummer. No matter how this plays out, I have to dash the hopes of at least 12 people.

And German political leaders are largely uninterested in improving the situation for tenants.

(*) I plan to use it for my retirement when I get older, and am using the rent to pay off the mortgage I took on when I paid off the co-heir.
