    CBS is shuttering its radio division, which provides top of the hour news segments to over 700 affiliate stations. CBS News was already in a rapid tailspin, but this will be a deeply felt blow to broadcast radio in the US.

      Back in August 2024, CBS shut down WCBS Newsradio 880AM, one of NYCs two all-news radio stations. At midnight the station changed its call sign to WHSQ and morphed into a generic syndicated sports format.

      Station management allowed the news staff pretty much free rein for the last day. I recorded the last hour or so from Washington, DC, which the signal regularly reached at night.

        @mattblaze Nice! I've downloaded that to enjoy later. As a child in Southern CA I loved listening to the LA (KNX) and SF (KCBS) CBS radio all news stations. KNX used to have old time radio from 9 to 10 every night. In the evenings I could pick up KCBS sometimes. Especially when camping out in the desert during pre-internet days I would listen to KCBS on my pocket radio when Art Bell got too boring or I couldn't find anything on shortwave.

          @mattblaze

          One of the good things of living too close to the US was that I get a lot of TV/radio stations. However, I'm afraid the fun won't last long.

          I'll certainly miss PBS.
