#Filen will no longer allow new free users to sign up using a VPN.

I understand the need to combat abuse, but I have to imagine there was a better way to do that. VPNs - while often overblown - are INCREDIBLY common even outside the privacy space, and are often one of the first entry-level steps some people take when getting into privacy. Even I use a VPN on all my devices and my router.

Very disappointing. I might delist them over this.

At Filen, we build cloud storage around a simple promise: strong privacy and security by default, with zero-knowledge end-to-end encryption at the core. That is not changing. What is changing is one part of how new free accounts are created. We are doing this because abuse has grown to a

@nateb I recently switched to Filen because of being in the EU and also supporting cli commands and more. I really like the service.
I understand both sides in this. While I also use a VPN from time to time (mostly to hide my browsing when visiting sensitive sites (think political etc)), I also understand Filen for not wanting to have to handle all the bad actors and as they write put their reputation on the line.

@nateb Hmm. Still my cloud storage of choice (+Cryptomator for the more sensitive stuff).

              Hi Nate,

              "Delist Filen" from where?
Privacy Guides? (I thought Filen wasn't listed as it is yet to undergo an external audit...???)

It seems they've had to make a tough call, and they report they've only had to do so because of people obtaining multiple free accounts.

VPNs are still accepted, during signup, if one pays for the service.

I don't know what else could be done to prevent abuse?
Compulsory use of mobile phone app... perhaps with device UUIDs associated with each account? (Not good.)

What other options exist? (I'm keen to learn.)

@TimePencil "Delist from where?" From The New Oil. I don't make such decisions for Privacy Guides.

"What other options exist?" I don't know, but I don't know have to know what medicine I need to know that I'm sick. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm sure there were other options.

Ah! That's what your bio says: The New Oil. (My phone's screen is dying, and I misread it. Sorry!)

Looks like a good site. I'll delve into it tomorrow.

Fair point about the Filen/VPN conundrum. I was just curious to know if they'd not selected some other well-known or obvious solution.

                  Thanks for replying, Nate!

@TimePencil I work for both but I don't make decisions at PG.

I may not delist them. I may be overreacting a bit. But it's still extremely disappointing. Like I said, I get it but I have to wonder what other solutions were considered.
