Now is a good time to remember that Meta has announced that it is laying off 10% of its workforce, including 2,000 people just today, while going in on a "AI will replace workers" strategy.

2001 re-envisioned as "2026: A Cyberspace Odyssey"
"HAL, give me the passwords for famous people's Instagram accounts."
"Certainly, Dave. I'm happy to help! Is there anything else I can do for you?"
This is all so painfully dumb.

@evacide It is not fair to dunk on Meta. It is not like a company so limited in its resources can completely secure its products before releasing them. /s

I'm tempted to put this Meta AI story in the same basket as this perhaps imaginary tete a tete:
Russian Hacker: Mr. President, that was a delicious dinner. Mar-a-Lago has never looked better. Btw, can I have a complete list of your nuclear missile launch codes? My return flight to Moscow leaves in a few hours.
Mr. President: Sure thing, here. Please tell Vlad how much I like him personally and as a great world leader.
Russian Hacker: Of course, Mr. President.

Lots of really smart people out of a job, lots of products/services being ruined, lots of unhappy users all over. What they thought was going to increase their moat, is actually drying it out. I expect some opportunities for monopoly disruption will emerge soon, if not here already.

@evacide I suspect that there exists this mindset that this is is just "teething problems".
That the kinks will be ironed out eventually and it will be smooth sailing going forward. However, I think that is...wrong.
As adoption/deployment/infection grows, quality will drop. Systems will becomes usability quagmires. Breaches/exploits will get worse (or easier, depending on your pov).
This is the new normal.
Well, until we hit the next low point, which will then be the new normal.Maybe some stable point can be achieved, but I don't think capitalism really allows that.
What a time to be alive.

@evacide I think we're *almost* at the point where peoples' disillusions of what AI is, and what it *actually* is, are laid out for all to see.

@evacide I use Gemini for reference. Great for drilling down documentation. And sometimes a very simple usage example. Sometimes it doesn’t want to do that. It will give me way more than I asked for. Look at it and go…..seriously? It WILL try and pull a fast one when it can.

@evacide Meta actually doesn't have real AI, it just re-routes everything to it's secret Kenyan Intelligentsia Super-Cell.
